A few weeks ago my wife got a call from a woman speaking broken English asking if she used Microsoft Windows. We use Linux in our house so she quickly said “No! I don’t use Windows!” and hung up.

Tonight I got a similar call from a man with a heavy Indian accent who told me he was calling from “Microsoft Technical Department” and asking if I was using Windows. I said I don’t use Windows but he insisted that I did and went on to tell me that my computer was infected with some virus and they had detected this and wanted to help me fix the problem. I was hoping to keep the guy on the line to waste more of his time and try to learn a bit about the scam, but I got a call from a client on the other line so I had to hang up. Later, I did some web searching and learned that this scam has been around for a while now.  The aim is to get control of your computer. Here’s a link to a guy who recorded one of the calls so you can see what it’s about:

While this scam is obvious to many, I can imagine that some people will fall for it so please pass the word about this one to your more gullible friends and family members.

If any of you have any further info or experience on this scam please feel free to comment below. Thanks!
